In
a violent society, or subset of a society, violence is nurtured, honed,
feared, taught, looked to for conflict resolution, looked to for
protection. Skills, weapons, alliances, necessary intimidation and
willingness to act punctuate all moments, lead all thinking. Survival,
dominance, these are natures demands.
Where there is no pretense
of a commonality of interests, mastery of force is the necessary evil.
Where there is a pretense of the commonality of interests diffusion of
conflict is a desirable thing.
The young are guided by many
motivations. In violent circumstance the must navigate the paths of
survival. In advanced societies they are often given not many
necessities. They are also not educated in the ways of conflict
resolution from an early age. Schools attempt to prepare their charges
for a workable future. A survivable future would seem to need giving
them the tools to survive.
